CONDITIONS & CONCERNS

Grief & Loss

Support for living with loss without prescribing how grief should look.

Understanding Grief & Loss

Grief can follow death, relationship endings, health changes, migration, role changes, lost opportunities, or other meaningful losses. There is no single correct timeline or sequence for grieving.

What it can look like

  • Sadness, yearning, or numbness
  • Anger, guilt, or regret
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Feeling disconnected from others
  • Waves of emotion triggered by reminders
  • Questions about identity or meaning
  • Difficulty adjusting to life after the loss
Important: Similar symptoms can have different causes. This page is general education, not a diagnosis. A qualified clinician can help determine what best explains your experience.

How therapy may help

Grief therapy can provide space to process the loss, make room for complicated emotions, address guilt or unfinished business, rebuild routines and connection, and develop a continuing relationship with what or whom was lost in a way that supports living.

Grief & Loss FAQs

Straight answers to common questions people ask

How long is grief supposed to last?
There is no universal timetable. Grief often changes over time rather than simply ending. Support may be useful when distress feels unmanageable or functioning remains significantly disrupted.
Does going to therapy mean my grief is abnormal?
No. Therapy can provide support during normal grief as well as help when grief becomes especially complicated or impairing.
Why can grief feel physical?
Grief can affect sleep, appetite, energy, concentration, muscle tension, and other bodily systems. New or concerning physical symptoms should still be medically evaluated.
Can I grieve something other than a death?
Yes. People can grieve relationships, health, fertility, identity, relocation, career changes, estrangement, lost expectations, and many other significant changes.
